Gilman Screen Co. was born as a hardware store in 1954 in San Francisco and its owner in the 1970’s turned it into a window and door screen company.

In 1983 Dick Gilman sold Gilman Screen Co. to Larry Lowenthal. Larry had a very successful first year in business and realized that he was working with a lot of general contractors who were doing work on homes throughout San Francisco.

In 1984 Larry moved out of his shared warehouse location on Donnor Ave. to a new warehouse on Napoleon St. and added some kitchen and bath cabinet displays. He felt that he could sell cabinets to the same contractors that were currently buying screens from him. It was a small but growing company and did not have any employees.

In 1985 Larry hired his first sales person whose responsibilities included cabinet sales and window screen manufacturing. In 1988 Larry moved the store to its current 5000 square foot location on Bayshore Blvd. and hired his first kitchen designers.

A new name was chosen and became Gilman Screens & Kitchens. The company continued to grow and in 1990 a satellite location was opened in the kitchen and bath mart in San Francisco to sell Kraftmaid cabinets. The location closed when the kitchen and bath mart closed but provided the opportunity to open a location in Foster City in 1992 in the Metro Center.

In 2004 a new Foster City location was created in Parkside Towers across from Foster City city hall. There was an additional location added in Greenbrae that had to close due to flooding but reopened in San Rafael in the Marin Home Center where it is currently located. Our Burlingame and Mountain View stores opened in 2002 to bring the total to five locations and about 30 employees.

Larry’s newest venture started in November of 2008 when the name of the company was changed again to Gilmans Kitchens and Baths, still selling window and door screens under the parent company name of Gilman Screens & Kitchens, but now doing full service remodeling.

GK+B can design your kitchen, bath, laundry, office or any room that needs cabinetry and provide the cabinetry or countertops. We will now do full service remodeling and design or sell the cabinetry to your contractor or designer. GK+B will work with all allied professionals. We can do as little of your project or as much of your project. We can even do room additions and full general contracting work. This division of the company has turned a profit even in the week economic times of early 2009 and is looked upon as a vital addition to the corporation.

They are very knowledgeable about all aspects of the project and are able to communicate the pros and cons at every step. I appreciate that they are mindful of monetary constraints. And they are very nice people!

Other with whom I have has some interaction are CJ and Tanzeem (this year); all of them represent your company well.

So, all in all, working with Gilmans has been a very good experience given the scope of work to be performed. I look forward to utilizing your services in the future when my wallet permits. In the meantime, I continue to recommend you to others when the opportunity arises.”
